An ambitious and challenging programme was presented at the three-day conference, attended by more than 300 participants from around the world. On each day, keynote speakers were addressing the five principal research themes:


- Governance, statehood and conflict transformation
- Health, vulnerability, resilience, and environmental sanitation
- Livelihoods, globalisation and urban planning
- Natural resources in sustainable development
- Research approaches and methodologies for sustainable development


Researchers from the international North-South community presented their experiences and the results of their work in numerous parallel sessions, which also served as a forum for discussion. In addition, three extended poster sessions allowed conference participants further exchange with the contributors.
